“How much does Morocco cost?”

It is the question I am asked more than any other. And it is also the question that gets the most misleading answers online — because the truth is, Morocco costs exactly what you decide it costs.

I have been organizing Morocco trips for over 8 years at Paradijom, our luxury private tour agency in Marrakech. I have seen travelers spend $30 a day and travelers spend $800 a day — and both had extraordinary experiences.

This guide gives you the exact numbers. Real prices. No vague estimates. No outdated information. This is what Morocco actually costs in 2025 — from someone who lives here and deals with these prices every single day.

Morocco Travel Cost Summary — 2025

Budget Type Daily Cost Per Person Who It’s For
Budget backpacker $30–$60/day Hostels, local food, public transport
Mid-range traveler $80–$150/day 3-star hotels, mix of restaurants
Comfort traveler $150–$250/day 4-star riads, private transport
Luxury traveler $300–$500+/day 5-star riads, private tours, fine dining

The most important thing to understand: Morocco is NOT a “cheap” destination if you want quality. It IS exceptional value compared to equivalent experiences in Europe — but budget travel in Morocco means budget experiences.

Accommodation Costs in Morocco 2025

Accommodation is your biggest expense in Morocco. Here is exactly what you get at each price point:

Budget Accommodation ($10–$40/night)

  • Basic hostels in Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen
  • Shared dormitories: $10–$20/night
  • Basic private rooms in cheap guesthouses: $25–$40/night
  • What to expect: thin mattresses, shared bathrooms, basic wifi
  • Best budget areas: Mellah in Fes, Gueliz outskirts in Marrakech

Mid-Range Accommodation ($50–$120/night)

  • 3-star hotels and mid-range riads
  • Private rooms with en-suite bathroom
  • Breakfast sometimes included
  • Good wifi and air conditioning
  • Examples: comfortable riads in medina side streets

Luxury Riads ($150–$400+/night)

This is where Morocco becomes genuinely extraordinary value.

A luxury riad in Marrakech — private suite, mosaic courtyard, rooftop terrace, candlelit in-house dining, private hammam — costs $150–$350 per night. The equivalent boutique hotel experience in Paris, Rome, or Barcelona costs $400–$800+ per night.

  • Entry-level luxury riad: $150–$200/night
  • Premium boutique riad: $200–$350/night
  • Ultra-luxury riad (private pool, exclusive use): $400–$800/night

Desert Camps — Merzouga/Agafay

  • Budget shared camp: $40–$80/person/night
  • Mid-range camp: $80–$150/person/night
  • Luxury private camp: $150–$300/person/night

Paradijom recommendation: Always choose luxury desert camp. The difference between a budget and a luxury desert experience is enormous — and the Sahara night sky deserves a comfortable bed beneath it.

Food & Drink Costs in Morocco 2025

Morocco has some of the most extraordinary food in the world — and it is available at every price point.

Street Food & Local Restaurants ($2–$10/meal)

Food Price (MAD) Price (USD)
Harira soup 5–10 MAD $0.50–$1
Msemen (Moroccan flatbread) 3–5 MAD $0.30–$0.50
Kefta sandwich 15–25 MAD $1.50–$2.50
Full local lunch 40–80 MAD $4–$8
Fresh orange juice 5–10 MAD $0.50–$1
Moroccan mint tea 5–15 MAD $0.50–$1.50

Local restaurant tip: Always eat where the menu is written in Arabic only and where there are no photos on the wall. This is where the real food is — and it costs almost nothing.

Mid-Range Restaurants ($15–$40/meal)

  • Tourist-friendly restaurants in medinas
  • International cuisine in Gueliz (Marrakech’s new city)
  • Most restaurant meals: 80–200 MAD ($8–$20) per person
  • A good tagine with salad and bread: 80–120 MAD ($8–$12)

Fine Dining & Luxury Restaurants ($40–$100+/meal)

Morocco’s luxury restaurants are extraordinary — and still cheaper than comparable dining in Europe.

  • Premium restaurant dinner: 300–600 MAD ($30–$60) per person
  • Luxury riad private dinner: 400–800 MAD ($40–$80) per person
  • Rooftop restaurant Marrakech: 200–400 MAD ($20–$40) per person

Best value meal in Morocco: Your riad’s breakfast. Most luxury riads serve a spectacular spread — fresh bread, msemen, amlou (argan oil and almond paste), honey, khobz, fresh orange juice, coffee or mint tea — included in your room rate.

Shopping & Souvenirs Budget

Morocco’s souks are extraordinary — and dangerous for your wallet.

Item Tourist price Fair price after bargaining
Small leather bag 300–500 MAD 150–200 MAD ($15–$20)
Moroccan carpet (small) 500–2000 MAD 300–800 MAD ($30–$80)

Silver jewelry 100–500 MAD 80–300 MAD ($8–$30)

Bargaining rule: Start at 40% of asking price. Settle around 60–65%. Always smile. Never show how much you love something before agreeing a price.

Warning: The argan oil price above is for REAL argan oil from a certified cooperative. If it costs less than 250 MAD per litre — it is diluted or fake.

Money Tips for Morocco 2025

Currency

  • Moroccan Dirham (MAD) — local currency
  • 1 USD = approximately 10 MAD (check current rate before travel)
  • Dirham is NOT convertible outside Morocco — convert any leftover before leaving

ATMs

  • Widely available in cities
  • Often run out of cash near tourist sites and in desert towns — especially on weekends
  • Withdraw enough cash in Marrakech or Fes before heading to the desert
  • ATM fee: usually 20–30 MAD per withdrawal ($2–$3)
  • Maximum withdrawal: usually 2,000–4,000 MAD per transaction

Cards

  • Accepted in major hotels, upscale restaurants, and some larger shops
  • Never rely on cards in medina souks, small restaurants, or desert areas
  • Always carry cash

Tipping Culture in Morocco

Service Tip amount
Restaurant server 10–15 MAD ($1–$1.50)
Hammam attendant 20–30 MAD ($2–$3)
Hotel porter 10–20 MAD ($1–$2)
Tour guide (full day) 100–200 MAD ($10–$20)
Private driver (per day) 50–100 MAD ($5–$10)
Riad staff (end of stay) 50–100 MAD per person

Tipping is not mandatory but always appreciated — especially for guides and drivers who work hard to make your experience extraordinary.

Is Morocco Expensive? The Honest Answer

Morocco is extraordinarily good value compared to Europe — but it is NOT a free or ultra-cheap destination.

Compared to Southern Europe: A 7-day luxury private tour of Morocco costs roughly the same as 7 days in Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast — but the experience is richer, more private, and more memorable.

Compared to Southeast Asia: Morocco is slightly more expensive than Thailand or Bali for budget travelers — but the culture, architecture, and landscapes are completely different and the value at the luxury level is comparable.

The most important thing: Whatever your budget, Morocco rewards you generously. A $5 bowl of harira soup in a Fes medina will be one of the best things you eat on your entire trip. A $300/night luxury riad in Marrakech will give you an experience that a $600/night hotel in Paris cannot.

Final Budget Advice from a Local Expert

After 8 years of organizing Morocco trips, here is my honest advice:

  1. Do not go too cheap on accommodation. A bad riad ruins the atmosphere of the entire medina experience.
  2. Splurge on the desert. Budget one night in a luxury desert camp rather than two nights in a budget one. The Sahara deserves a proper bed.
  3. Hire a private guide in Fes. The $80–$150 you spend on a full-day private guide in Fes will unlock experiences worth 10 times that amount.
  4. Withdraw enough cash in Marrakech. ATMs in the desert are unreliable. Never arrive in Merzouga without enough cash for your stay.
  5. Budget $200–$500 for shopping. Morocco’s souks are extraordinary. You will want to buy things. Budget for it in advance.
